Beyond Kerala: Why Udupi Is a Quieter Place for Ayurveda

Kerala isn't the only coast for Ayurveda. Udupi has temple-town vegetarian food, Tulu seasonal traditions and fewer tourists, and one flight from the Gulf.

When people picture Ayurveda in India, they picture Kerala: backwaters, houseboats, a long list of famous centres. Kerala earned that reputation, and it deserves it.

But drive a few hours north up the same coast, past Kasaragod and Mangalore, and you reach Udupi. Same Arabian Sea. Same monsoon. A different culture, far fewer tourists, and, for anyone coming to eat simply and slow down, a food tradition that could have been designed for it.

This is our home, so we’re biased. Here’s why we think it’s worth a look.

Where Udupi is

Udupi sits on the coast of Karnataka, in the region called Tulu Nadu after its language, Tulu. It’s a temple town, a university town (Manipal is next door), and a fishing coast, all within a few kilometres.

  • ◆Nearest airport: Mangalore International, about 60 km south.
  • ◆By rail: Udupi is on the Konkan Railway, with trains from Mumbai, Goa and Mangalore.
  • ◆From the Gulf: Mangalore has direct flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Muscat, most around three and a half to four hours.
  • ◆From Europe, North America and Australia: one connection, typically via the Gulf, Bengaluru or Mumbai.

Getting here from your city

These are the routings most of our international guests use.

  • ◆Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat: direct to Mangalore · around 3.5 to 4 hours; several flights a week on the main routes
  • ◆London, Manchester, Dublin: via a Gulf hub to Mangalore, or to Bengaluru/Mumbai then a domestic flight · the Gulf connection usually means one change and no domestic leg
  • ◆Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Paris: via a Gulf hub, or to Bengaluru or Mumbai · winter departures fill early around Christmas
  • ◆New York, Toronto, California: via a Gulf hub, or via Europe to Bengaluru or Mumbai · build in a rest night on arrival if you land late
  • ◆Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo: usually via Bengaluru, or a Southeast Asian or Gulf hub · check whether your e-Visa port of entry matches your routing
  • ◆Within India: Konkan Railway from Mumbai or Goa; flights or overnight buses from Bengaluru · the train along the Konkan coast is an experience in itself

Our advice: don’t arrive on the morning your programme starts after an overnight flight. A rest night in Mangalore or on campus makes the first days of your programme much easier.

A food culture that already eats this way

Udupi’s cooking grew up around the kitchens of the Sri Krishna Matha, the 13th-century temple at the centre of town. The tradition is vegetarian, often without onion and garlic, built on rice, coconut, lentils, local greens and seasonal vegetables.

That matters for an Ayurveda stay. At many retreats, satvik food is a rulebook guests follow reluctantly. Here it’s simply what the region cooks. Our kitchen draws on it, and the milk comes from our own goshala.

“Kanji made with red rice and a spoon of ghee is on our table most mornings,” says Dr Deepthi Konamme. “It is close to what a Udupi household would serve, and it happens to be exactly the kind of light, warm breakfast we want guests eating during a programme, so the local way of cooking and the clinical brief agree with each other more often than people expect.”

What coastal food looks like on your plate

Home cooking on this coast is built from a short list of ingredients: rice in many forms, coconut, lentils, jaggery, tamarind, curry leaves, local gourds and greens. A few dishes you may meet, in town or on our table:

  • ◆Kosambari:a light salad of soaked split lentils, cucumber or carrot, coconut and a little lime.
  • ◆Saaru:a thin, peppery lentil or tomato broth, the region’s everyday comfort.
  • ◆Huli:a lentil-and-vegetable curry, milder and more coconut-rich than a northern dal.
  • ◆Neer dosa:soft, lacy rice crêpes. The name means “water dosa”.
  • ◆Pathrode:colocasia leaves layered with spiced rice batter, steamed and sliced.
  • ◆Menthe ganji:rice and fenugreek porridge with jaggery, traditionally eaten in the monsoon month of Aati.

During a programme your doctor adjusts all of this. Sour, spicy or heavy dishes may be paused in some phases, and portions change as you move through preparation, main procedures and recovery.

Seasonal wisdom, still practised

Tulu Nadu has its own calendar and its own seasonal food traditions. In the monsoon month of Aati, families still prepare a bitter bark decoction on the new-moon day, followed by a warming rice and fenugreek porridge. It’s the same seasonal thinking (Ritucharya) that shapes an Ayurvedic programme, kept alive at kitchen-table level.

Quieter than the famous coast

Kerala’s best-known Ayurveda areas can be busy in high season. Udupi receives far fewer international visitors. For a retreat, that shows up as:

  • ◆Empty stretches of beach on a weekday morning
  • ◆Temple bells and birdsong instead of traffic
  • ◆No pressure to "see the sights"; there are sights, but they’ll wait

If you have a free afternoon

Most of our guests stay on the campus. For those with a rest day in their programme, and your doctor’s blessing:

  • ◆Sri Krishna Matha:the temple at the heart of Udupi. Go early.
  • ◆Malpe beach:wide sand and fishing boats; sunset is the time.
  • ◆St Mary’s Island:a short boat ride from Malpe to unusual hexagonal basalt rock formations (the boats generally don’t run during the monsoon).
  • ◆Yakshagana:the region’s all-night dance-drama tradition. Ask us if a performance is on nearby.

Traditions you may glimpse

Tulu Nadu’s culture is lived, not staged for visitors. Depending on the month, you may come across:

  • ◆Paryaya:held every two years in January, when management of the Sri Krishna Matha passes ceremonially from one of the town’s eight monasteries to the next.
  • ◆Kambala:traditional buffalo races through flooded paddy fields, usually between November and March.
  • ◆Yakshagana:the all-night dance-drama, with painted faces, vast headdresses and drums, performed mainly in the dry months after the monsoon.
  • ◆Bhuta Kola:a sacred ritual honouring local guardian spirits. It is a religious ceremony, not a performance. Attend only if invited, and follow your hosts’ lead.
  • ◆Aati:the monsoon month, with its seasonal foods and the bark decoction described above.

None of this needs planning. Ask our team what’s on during your dates, and your doctor whether a late evening fits your programme.

For families and Manipal visitors

Many guests have a second reason to be here: a child studying in Manipal, a relative in the region, or family who want to come along without joining the programme.

  • ◆The farmhouse has three en-suite bedrooms and its own private pool, sleeping up to six. It suits families and small groups.
  • ◆Attenders:a partner, parent or friend who stays with you but doesn’t join the programme, are welcome at a daily attender rate. Children are welcome too.
  • ◆Practices are for booked guests. Attenders can join if they book their own programme.
  • ◆Manipal is next door, so visiting students or family during a rest day is easy.

The campus

Kanasu sits in coastal forest outside Udupi: wooden pool-facing cottages, a three-bedroom farmhouse with its own pool, two swimming pools, a yoga shala, Ayurvedic wellness rooms, a herbal garden, fruit orchards, a goshala with our Bos indicus cows, and a small cold-pressed oil unit.

Udupi or Kerala?

  • ◆Choice of centres: Kerala: very wide · Udupi and coastal Karnataka: few, smaller
  • ◆Tourist density: Kerala: higher in season · Udupi: low
  • ◆Food culture: Kerala: rich, varied, plenty of non-vegetarian · Udupi: deeply vegetarian temple-town tradition
  • ◆Gulf access: Kerala: several airports with Gulf routes · Udupi: Mangalore, with direct Gulf flights
  • ◆Best for: Kerala: choice, famous names, backwater travel · Udupi: quiet, fewer distractions, a more local feel

If you want a menu of famous names and a classic Kerala itinerary, go to Kerala. If you want to disappear for two weeks somewhere most travellers haven’t heard of, come here.

Who Udupi isn’t for

We’d rather you know now than find out on day two.

  • ◆Nightlife. There isn’t much, and none of it is on campus.
  • ◆A resort beach scene. The beaches are real working coastline, not sunbeds and bars.
  • ◆A big menu of famous centres to compare in person. Kerala or Rishikesh offer more of that.
  • ◆Heat-averse travellers in April and May, or rain-averse ones in June and July.

Combining Udupi with the rest of South India

Many international guests fold a stay here into a longer trip. The rule of thumb our doctors give: travel before your programme, not after it. The days after Panchakarma are for rest, simple food and early nights, not long drives.

  • ◆North to Goa:along the coast by Konkan Railway.
  • ◆South to Kerala:by train or road via Mangalore.
  • ◆Inland to Coorg:coffee country in the hills of the Western Ghats.
  • ◆Further inland to Hampi:ruined temples and boulder landscapes; a longer journey, best as a separate leg.

FAQ

How far is Udupi from Mangalore airport? Around 60 km.

Is Udupi good for foreign tourists? Yes, though it’s less set up for mass tourism than Goa or Kerala. That’s part of its appeal for a retreat.

What language is spoken in Udupi? Tulu and Kannada locally, with Konkani too. English is widely understood, and our team speaks it throughout.

Can families visiting Manipal stay at Kanasu? Yes. The farmhouse suits families and small groups; attenders can stay without joining the programme.

How far is the nearest beach? Malpe beach is a short drive from Udupi town.

Can I visit the Sri Krishna temple? Yes, visitors are welcome. Dress modestly, remove your shoes, and follow the customs you see around you. Early morning is quietest.

Can I combine Kanasu with Goa or Kerala? Yes. Travel before your programme rather than after, so the rest days that follow aren’t spent on the road.

Is Udupi very rainy? From June to September, yes. Many guests choose those months deliberately.
