I Was 34, Overweight, and Pre-Diabetic. I Spent 14 Days at an Ayurvedic Retreat in Karnataka.

A real account of addressing pre-diabetes and metabolic weight gain through a 14 day doctor-led Ayurvedic programme at Kanasu Wellness Udupi Karnataka.

The number on my blood test was 6.1. My regular doctor said watch your diet, reduce sugar, come back in three months.

I was 34. I had been watching my diet for two years. I was not eating badly by any reasonable measure. But the weight had arrived gradually over five years, particularly around my abdomen and it had not responded to anything I had tried. The pre-diabetes reading felt like a door closing.

A colleague who had spent time at Kanasu Wellness in Udupi mentioned it casually. I looked it up that evening. By the following week I had booked fourteen days into the Healthy Weight Management Programme.

What Ayurveda says about metabolic weight gain

The Kanasu doctor was direct in our first consultation. In Ayurveda, the kind of weight gain I was describing is gradual, centred around the abdomen, not responsive to diet restriction it is not primarily a calorie problem. It is a metabolic fire problem. Agni, the digestive and metabolic intelligence, has become impaired. Ama accumulates. The body's ability to process and transform what it takes in has become sluggish.

The relationship between Ama and insulin resistance, she explained, is something that modern metabolic science is now beginning to document. The Ayurvedic solution does not try to outrun poor metabolism. It restores it.You can read more about this approach on the Kanasu Ayurveda approach page.

The programme: what 14 days actually looked like

Days 1–2 were assessment and preparation. Full Prakriti and Vikriti evaluation, blood pressure, baseline observations. The diet began immediately: warm, freshly cooked meals emphasising bitter and astringent tastes, which in Ayurveda reduce Kapha and support fat metabolism. No cold food or drink. No sugar. Warm water with specific herbs throughout the day.

Abhyangam started on day three, followed by Swedana a medicated steam therapy. Together these begin moving Ama from tissues toward the digestive tract where it can be eliminated. The body preparation phase takes four to five days before the main detox therapies begin.

Virechana and Basti: what they actually involve

Virechana is a medicated purgation therapy. After the preparation phase, a specifically formulated herbal preparation is administered that facilitates a controlled, thorough cleansing of the digestive tract. It sounds alarming. In practice it was manageable and the day after I felt a lightness and clarity that I had not experienced in years.

Basti followed over several days a medicated enema therapy using herbal decoctions. Basti is the most important Panchakarma therapy for Vata disorders and for deep metabolic reset. It is also the most misunderstood. In practice it is brief, professionally administered, and its effects on digestion and energy over the following days were noticeable.

Udvarthana and the weight question

The daily Udvarthanam sessions with herbal powder massage were the most physically demanding part of the programme. By day nine, my clothes were fitting differently. By day twelve, the heaviness I had been carrying around my middle for five years had reduced in a way that ten months of gym attendance had not managed.

The doctor was careful to frame this correctly. The goal was metabolic restoration, not weight loss as a number. But metabolic restoration, when it works, produces weight loss as a natural outcome. This is precisely the philosophy behind the Metabolic Reset Programme at Kanasu.

The Goshala and the slower rhythm

Kanasu has an on-site Goshala a small sanctuary for their native Bos indicus cows. Afternoons there became an anchor in the fourteen days. The organic dairy produced by these cows is used in the sattvic cooking. Spending time with animals that are genuinely calm, in an environment that is genuinely quiet, does something that structured relaxation activities do not quite replicate.

By day ten I had stopped thinking about my phone. By day twelve I had stopped wanting to.

The results, honestly reported

I left Kanasu having lost 4.2 kilograms over fourteen days. More significant to me: my fasting glucose, checked the week after I returned, had reduced to 5.7. My GP was surprised. I was not.

The exit plan included a revised diet protocol, morning practices, herbal support for Agni, and a follow-up schedule. The doctor was clear that the programme had reset the metabolic foundation and that what happened next depended on how well I maintained the new baseline.

Eight months on, my weight has continued to reduce slowly and consistently. My glucose levels remain in the normal range.
